 JANUARY

05 Jan 02 - PDMRO - 5 dog teams (Alex Muller; Ken Sloan; John Coombs; Dave Coss; Steve Ward) + Kinder and Edale MRTs. Called out at 1800 hrs.
Search for father and 17 yr old son got lost on Kinder Scout and used their mobile phone to alert MRT. They were located safe and well by Kinder Section. Incident closed at 2300 hrs. Weather – deep snow & cloud. (25 dog hours).

09/10 Jan 02   NESRA - 1 dog team (Des toward) + Teesdale & Weardale SRT + Police helo. Called out at 2320 hrs.
Search for a 55 yr old Durham lady missing from home and suffering from senile dementia. The missing lady was located cold and confused in school grounds by a team member. Incident closed at 0500 hrs 10 Jan 02. Weather – cold. (5 ½ dog hours).

10 Jan 02 MID-PENNINE - 1 dog team (Helen Morton) + Rossendale MRT. Called out 1405 hrs.
Search for a depressed man, missing from home. Search dog stood down before deploying. Incident closed at 1422 hrs (17 dog minutes).

12 Jan 02  SWERA   3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons; Alex Lyons; Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group (Tavistock Section).  Called out 1330 hrs.
A local huntsman fell from his horse on Gutter Tor, injuring his back. With the Air Ambulance fog bound, dogs were tasked to pinpoint the casualty and assist with recovery. The casualty was located and recovered by HMS Raleigh personnel. Weather – misty,wet. Incident closed 1500 hrs. (4 ½ dog hours).

12 Jan 02 MID-PENNINE - 1 dog team (Helen Morton) + Rossendale MRT. Called out at 0247 hrs.
Search for an 80 yr old man missing from nursing home. Missing man was located by Police before the search dog deployed. Incident closed at 0345 hrs (1 dog hour).

20 Jan 02  SWERA - 3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons; Alex Lyons; Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group (Tavistock Section). Called out at 1900 hrs.
Search dogs called to assist in search for a missing dog-walker. Missing person turned up safe and well while dog teams en route to RV. Incident closed at 2000 hrs. (3 dog hours).

31 Jan 02 SHREWSBURY   1 dog team (Bill Batson) + Longtown, Brecon and Stafford MRTs + Police dogs and personnel. Called out at 1000 hrs.  Search for missing man, possibly suicidal, in Haughmond Hill area near Shrewsbury. He was located, hanged in tree by Search Dog Kyle. DOG FIND – BILL BATSON & KYLE. Weather – dry and windy. Incident closed at 1345 hrs. (3 ¾ dog hours).

FEBRUARY

 05 Feb 02  PDMRO 4 dog teams (Alex Muller; Malc Bowyer; Izzy Manning; John Coombs) + Buxton, Derby, Glossop and Kinder MRTs. Called  0530 hrs.
Search for (male) driver of car abandoned at Cat & Fiddle Inn in the Goyt Valley. Search of quarries carried out. The missing person was located dead in quarry by Police. Weather – wet and windy. Incident closed at 0830  hrs. (12 dog hours).

10 Feb 02       Scottish Highlands      1 SARDA (England) dog team (Helen Morton) + 2 SARDA Scotland dog teams + Cairngorm MRT. Called out at ? 
Search for a man suffering from Hodgkin’s Disease and depression, missing from nursing home. Missing man was located dead (drowned) in a pond by Police divers after search dog indicated on site. Weather – dry, sunny, cold. Incident closed at 1200 hrs (?dog hours).

 10 Feb 02       NESRA            1 dog team (Brian Allport) + NNP SRT, NoT SRT. Called out at 0530 hrs. 
Search for missing an 18yr old man in Catton; possibly suicidal. Woodland search carried out. Missing man located by police in Glasgow! Weather – good. Incodent closed at 0930 hrs (3 dog hours).

 21 Feb 02       NESRA            3 dog teams (Mike Chart, Iain Nixon, Brian Allport) + NNP SRT, NoT SRT. Called out at 0030 hrs.
Search for missing despondent, possibly suicidal, 34 yr old woman in Bedlington. Woodland search carried out. Missing woman was located in a distraught state in a pub adjacent to the search area, by search controller! Weather – good. Incident closed at 0230 hrs (30 dog minutes).

 22 Feb 02       NORTH WALES         1 SARDA (England) dog team (Bill Batson) + 1 SARDA (Wales) dog team (Steve Howe) + Rolland Leyland & Richard . + Police helo. Bill Batson called out from Plas y Brenin at 0850hrs.
Search for a missing elderly man in Fairbourne. Shortly after the search was commenced, the missing man was located by Rolland Leyland, deceased, 50 yards from his home. Weather – warm, dry, breezy. Incident closed at 1150 hrs. (3 SARDA (England) dog hours + 3 SARDA (Wales) dog hours).

 25 Feb 02       SHREWSBURY          1 dog team (Bill Batson) + Stafford MRT + Police dogs and personnel. Called out at 1400 hrs.
Search for missing 51 yr old female, possibly suicidal, in Pontesford Hill area near Shrewsbury. While the search was underway, the missing person was located in Pontesbury village, uninjured but suffering from an overdose of an unknown drug. Weather – damp, windy. Incident closed at 1730 hrs. (3 ½ dog hours).

25 Feb 02       MID-PENNINE 2 dog teams (Paul Baxendale; Dave Marsh) + Bolton MRT. Called out at 0025 hrs.
Bolton MRT including 2 search dog teams called out to search for 3 yr old girl missing from home in Little Hulton, Manchester. Little girl was found cold, wet but uninjured close to M61 motorway and 500 yds from home by Bolton MRT personnel. Weather – 3 deg C, moderate to heavy rain. Incident closed at 0545 hrs. (10 ¾ dog hours).

MARCH

05 Mar 02       PDMRO          3 dog teams (Alex Muller; Dave Coss; John Coombs) + Buxton MRT. Called out at 1600 hrs.
Call out for a 73 yr old glider pilot who had bailed out of his aircraft over Abney. He had in fact parachuted safely to ground and SAR assets were not required. Incident closed at 1610 hrs. (10 dog minutes!).

07 Mar 02       PDMRO          5 dog teams (Alex Muller; Malc Bowyer; Dave Coss; John Coombs; Steve Ward) + Glossop and Kinder MRTs. Called out at 1800 hrs.
Search for a man missing from home in Glossop, suffering from depression. Teams stood down after further information received from Police. Weather – dry. Incident closed at 2130 hrs. (17 ½ dog hours).

14 Mar 02       WEST WALES           1 dog team (Bill Batson) + St Athan and Brecon Beacons MRTs + Police dogs. Called out at 0600 hrs.
Search for a male Alzheimer’s Disease sufferer missing from home in Rhydcymerau, West Wales. Woodland, farmland and farm buildings searched. With nothing found, the search was terminated by Police at 1800 hrs. Weather – occ. showers, fresh wind. (12 dog hours).

 16/17 Mar 02  YDRP  4 dog teams (Pete Shaw; Helen Morton; Dave Marsh; C Francis) + Police and cadaver dogs + Keswick, Kendal, Penrith, Furness, Kirkby Stephen MRTs and CRO. Called out at 0800 hrs.
A large scale search of high moorland for a missing 21 yr old male in Garsdale area. Missing person’s remains were discovered (dismembered) in forested area by Police cadaver dogs. Weather – light SE wind; good visibility. Incident closed 17 Mar 02 at 1100 hrs. (26 dog hours).

18 Mar 02       PDMRO          2 dog teams + Woodhead MRT. Called out at 0118 hrs.
Called out to help search for man missing from home. Incident closed at 0500 hrs. No further details (7.3 dog hours).

21 Mar 02       SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons; Alex Lyons; Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group Tavistock Section. Called out at 0800 Search for a missing 42 yr old man in Merrivale area. Alex Lyon’s navigator found initially footprint in Longash wood. Search Dog Aitken then located the missing man unconscious in cave. DOG FIND ALEX LYONS & AITKEN. The casualty was evacuated by rescue team members to the Air Ambulance. Weather – clear and dry. Incident closed at 1600 hrs. (24 dog hours)

.25 Mar 02       PDMRO          2 dog teams (Malc Bowyer; John Coombs). Called out at 1525 hrs.
Request from Staffs Police to search for missing 66yr old female suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Missing lady turned up before the search commenced. Dog teams stood down on arrival.

26 Mar 02       NESRA            1 dog team (Bill Batson) + Scarborough SRT + Cleveland SRT. Called out at 0500 hrs.
Request from N .Yorkshire Police to assist in a search for missing, possible suicidal man, in the Goathland area. Search terminated at 1500 hrs with nothing found. The missing man subsequently returned home safe and well some days later. Weather – warm and sunny, light breeze. Dog search completed 1300 hrs; Incident closed at 1500 hrs (8 dog hours).

APRIL

 06 Apr 02        NEWSAR        2 dog teams (John Coombs; Issy Manning) + NEWSAR. Called out at 0900 hrs.
PDMRO dog teams were requested by NEWSAR to assist in a search of Cefn Mawr near Wrexham for a missing 51 yr old man, possibly suicidal. Weather – dry, sunny, breezy. Nothing found by 1920 hrs. Missing man found dead in back garden after the search had terminated. Incident closed at 2000 hrs (22 dog hours).

07 Apr 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at 15.45 hrs.
Called out by Cleveland Police to search for a 70 yr old man suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, overdue from a walk near his home in Norton. He normally took his dog with him and the dog shows him the way home. This time he went without his dog and was found safe and well in Great Smeaton, 20+ miles from the search area! Weather - warm & sunny with gentle breeze. Incident closed at 2100 hrs (5.25 dog hours).

08 Apr 02        MID-PENNINE 6 dog teams (Ken Sloan; Steve Ward; Helen Morton; Steve Garafalo; Dave Marsh; Paul Baxendale) + Bolton & Oldham MRTs + 4 mid-Pennine dogs. Called out at 0220 hrs.
Search for a 10 yr old girl missing since 1900 hrs the previous evening in the Oldham area. The missing girl walked in to her home during search. Incident closed at 0650 hrs. Weather – cold, clear. Incident closed at 0945 hrs (46 dog hours).

11 Apr 02        PDMRO          1 dog team (Malc Bowyer). Called out at 1750 hrs.
SARDA members were requested to assist in the search for a missing 68 yr old man with Alzheimer’s Disease, missing from home in Lyme Park area. The missing man was located by Police before SARDA teams deployed. Incident closed at 1915 hrs. (1 hr 25 mins dog hours).

15 Apr 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at 1315 hrs.
Called out by Police to search open woodland after a rucksack was located, with no sign of the owner. The rucksack contained a diary in which notes suggested that the owner was in a depressed state. The missing man was located at home by police. He had become tired and couldn’t be bothered to carry his sack any more. Weather - warm and sunny with gentle breeze. Incident closed at 1830 hrs (3.5 dog hours).

22 Apr 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at 0030 hrs.
Called out to join the search for a missing, possibly suicidal male in Skelton. The search was called off before it commenced when police received more information. Weather - fair. Incident closed at 0215 (1.75 dog hours).

27 Apr 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at 0530.
Called out by Police to search for a foster child missing from her home in Malton. The missing girl turned up safe & well at friend’s house before the search commenced. Weather - cold, breezy, light rain. Incident closed 0845 hrs (3 dog hours).

28 Apr 02        NESRA            2 dog teams (Des Toward, Tim Wood) + Cleveland SRT. Called out at 1345 hrs.
Called out to search for a young dog that had fallen over Whitestone Cliff near Sutton Bank. Nothing was found and the search was called off. Weather - fair. Incident closed at 1800 hrs (4.5 dog hours).

29 Apr 02        SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group.
Search for a missing 60 yr old man in the Honiton area. The missing man was located confused but otherwise well as dogs were being deployed. Weather – dry. Incident closed at 1900.

30 Apr 02        MID-PENNINE 2 dog teams (Dave Marsh; Helen Morton) + Bolton, Oldham & Rossendale MRTs. Called out at 2035 hrs.
Search for a missing 80 yr old diabetic man, missing from his residential home in Manchester. Shortly after teams deployed, the missing man was located in public house close to home. Weather – cold, overcast, rain showers. Incident closed at 2335 hrs (6 dog hours).

MAY

 03 May 02       MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Dave Marsh) + Oldham MRT. Called out at 0152 hrs.
Search for a missing 70 yr old Manchester man, missing in Horrocks Fold Area of Bolton. An overnight search revealed nothing and the missing man was located on a moorland road by family members the following afternoon. Apparently he had been sleeping rough. Weather – cold, wet, rain showers. Incident closed at 1000 hrs (8 dog hours).

 10 May 02       Shrewsbury     1 dog team (Bill Batson) + RAF Stafford MRT + Police. Called out at 1515 hrs.
Stafford MRT requested by West Mercia Police to assist in a search for a missing, possibly suicidal man in Haughmond Hill area near Shrewsbury. With nothing found by 1830 hrs, the search was terminated by Police. Misper later walked in on arrival of family members. He had been avoiding searchers and was attempting to regain contact with his estranged wife. Weather – bright and sunny; fresh wind. Incident closed at 1845 hrs (3 ½ dog hours).

12 May 02       SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 1300 hrs. Search for a group of 6 missing on the Ten Tors expedition. Dog teams deployed by helicopter to search between check points. Missing persons were located alive and well by search dog Nicki and were airlifted out. DOG FIND –NICKI LYONS AND BLUIE. Weather  - dry. Incident closed at 1345 hrs (2 ¼ dog hrs).

 13 May 02       SWERA          1 dog team (Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 1400 hrs.
Search for a missing 60 yr old lady in the Plymouth area. The search was postponed until end of working day. Missing lady’s body was located in a garden a day or two later. Weather – dry. Incident closed at 2200 hrs (8 dog hours).

18 May 02       SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 1300.
Dogs called out by HM Coastguard to search a collapsed cliff in an area frequented by fishermen. Nothing found. Weather – dry. Incident closed at 1700 hrs (12 dog hours).

 18 May 02       NEWSAR        3 dog teams (Alex Muller; John Coombs; Dave Coss) + NEWSAR. Called out at 1200 hrs.
PDMRO search dogs requested by SARDA North Wales to assist in the search for a 24 yr old missing from home in Frodsham, Cheshire the previous evening. Missing person walked in to home. Search terminated at 1400 hrs (6 dog hours).

 19 May 02       NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at 1415 hrs.
Search for a 23 yr old student missing from parent’s home in Yarm. Search completed, with nothing found. Weather - warm, gentle breeze. Incident ongoing. (5.75 dog hours).

20 May 02       NESRA            4 dog teams (Tim Wood, Des Toward, Brian Allport, Rich Wood) + Teesdale, Scarborough, Swaledale, Penrith, Kirkby Stephen, NNP SRT, NoT SRT and RAF Leeming MRTs. Called out at 0001 hrs.
Search for a missing 71 yr old man who had become separated from his fellow walker near Barnard Castle. A search of open moorland was completed, with nothing found. Missing man was located by Police in Middleton in Teesdale in B&B, unaware of the incident. Weather – good. Incident closed at 11 hrs 21 May). (9 dog hours).

27 May 02       MID-PENNINE 2 dog teams (Alex Muller; Malc Bowyer) + Kinder and Buxton MRTs + Police. Called out at 1900 hrs.
2 SARDA dog teams were requested to assist in the search for a missing 36 yr old man last seen running away down a disused railway track in Hyde, Cheshire. A search carried out, with nothing found. Missing man was later located in Sheffield!  Incident closed at 1600 hrs 28 May (11 dog hours).

 JUNE

06 Jun 02        PDMRO          2 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs) + Derby MRT. Called out at 1915 hrs
 Search for a missing 77 yr old lady from Alfreton. She was found safe and well 2 days later by a Police helicopter, 10 miles from last known position. Incident closed at 0015 hrs (10 dog hours).

07 Jun 02        NEWSAR        1 SARDA England dog team (Bill Batson) + SARDA North Wales dog team (Mark Hall) + NEWSAR. Called out at 1430 hrs.
Called at request from North Wales Police to assist in the search for a 42 yr old suicidal man, missing from home in Overton for 48 hours. Missing man was located hanged in tree in Penley wood by members of NEWSAR. Weather – damp, slight wind. Incident closed at 1900 hrs (4 ½ SARDA England dog hours + 4 ½ SARDA Wales dog hours).

17 Jun 02        MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Dave Marsh) + Bolton MRT + Greater Manchester Police. Called out at 20.04 hrs.  Search for a missing 32 yr old man by GMP, Bolton MRT inc. SARDA dog team. Missing man was located by search dog Chi at 2130 hrs. The man was suffering from self-inflicted multiple lacerations to both arms and had over-dosed on ecstasy, valium and paracetamol and alcohol. DOG FIND – DAVE MARSH & CHI. Weather – warm, clear, wet underfoot. Incident closed at 2315 hrs (3 ¼ dog hours). *** See follow-up incident on 11 Jul 02**

26/27 Jun 02   MID-PENNINE 3 dog teams (Dave Marsh, Helen Morton, Steve Garafalo) + Bolton MRT & Rossendale SRT. Called out at 22.25 hrs on 26 June
Search for an 82 yr old man suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, missing from his nursing home in Ramsbottom area. The missing man was located by Greater Manchester Police at 0200 hrs on 27 Jun. Incident closed 0210 hrs 27 Jun. (11 ¼  dog hours)

27 Jun 02        PDMRO          2 dog teams + Kinder and Glossop MRTs. Called out at 0215 hrs.
Search for missing a 14 yr old female, missing from home since previous evening. No further details. Incident closed at 0845 hrs (13 dog hours).

JULY

11 Jul 02         MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Dave Marsh) + Oldham MRT. Called out at 0520 hrs.   New search for the man previously found on 17 Jun by Search Dog Chi. This time Search Dog Chi located the man’s body (hanged), close to position he was last found. DOG FIND – DAVE MARSH AND CHI. Weather – overcast; occ heavy rain. Incident closed at 1415 hrs (3 dog hours).

 17/18 Jul 02    PDMRO          5 dog teams (Dave Coss, Ken Sloan, Mal Bowyer, Steve Ward, John Coombs) + Glossop MRT. Called out at 2330 hrs.
Search for 2 missing male walkers. Both were located safe and well by Glossop MRT in the Bleaklow area. The pair had been overtaken by darkness and were unable to find their way off the hill (they had no torches). Weather – light wind, dry. Incident closed at 0130 hrs 18 July. (10 dog hours).

19 Jul 02         SWERA          1 dog team (Ian Spreckley). Called out at 1400 hrs.
Search for a missing man after his car was found abandoned near Stepps Bridge, Devon. Missing man was subsequently located by Police in Exeter. Weather – good. Incident closed at 1840 hours (4 dog hours).

19 Jul 02         PDMRO          4 dog teams ( Dave Coss, Steve Ward, Alex Muller, John Coombs) + Buxton and Edale MRTs. Called out at 1520 hrs.
Search for a missing suicidal 31 yr old female. The lady had left a note in her car, and “went for a walk”. She avoided searchers and was located safe but confused by a local water bailiff in Monsal Dale. Weather – started fine then turned wet. Incident closed at 2130 hrs (25 dog hours).

20 Jul 02         PDMRO          3 dog teams (Steve Ward, John Coombs, Ken Sloan) + Woodhead & Glossop MRTs. Called out at 0645 hrs.
Following a phone call from a member of the public who came across what appeared to be an RTA where a car had left the road and had been on fire, the Police asked for search dogs to check the surrounding area as there were 2 cars but only 1 casualty. The search was called off when it was revealed that the second car had been there for a week and was known to the local Police officer. Weather – wet. Incident closed at 0735 hrs (2 ½ dog hours).

22 Jul 02         SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group Tavistock Section. Called out at 1830 hrs.
Search for a missing 50 yr old lady in the Baggator area. The missing lady was located safe and well at Walkham by a Range Warden, having spent the night out after becoming lost in bad weather. Weather – misty, damp. Incident closed at 2030 hrs (6 dog hours).

24 Jul 02         PDMRO          4 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs, Steve Ward, Ken Sloan) + Kinder, Edale, Buxton & Glossop MRTs. Called out at 0800 hrs.
Search for 4 females missing since the previous night after failing to make their camp site. Search dogs were tasked to search Kinder and surrounding area. All missing girls were located safe and well by Kinder MRT. Weather – dry, moderate wind. Incident closed at 1030 hrs (10 dog hours).

 25 Jul 02         NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood). Called out at1650 hrs.
 Search of rough ground for an 18 yr old man missing after going clubbing in Stockton. Nothing was found and the search was terminated. Weather - warm, moderate breeze. Incident closed at 2110 hrs (1.5 dog hours)

26 Jul 02         PDMRO          2 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs). Called out at 1230 hrs.
Search of woods and parkland for a 13 yr old girl missing from home in Burton on Trent since leaving for school. She was located safe and well after Police enquiries. Weather – hot and sunny. Incident closed at 1945 hrs (10 dog hours).

27 Jul 02         NESRA            1 dog handler (Brian Allport) + NNP SRT, NoT SRT. Called out at 1230 hrs.
Search for a missing, possibly suicidal 51 yr old man. Woodland search carried out with nothing found. Weather – good. Incident closed at 1730 hrs (3.5 dog hours)

27 Jul 02         PDMRO          3 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs, Steve Ward) + Kinder MRT. Called out at 0210 hrs.
Search for a missing 14 yr old girl from Hayfield. The girl then phoned home from a friend’s house, having stayed out all night following a row with her parents. Incident closed at 0930 hrs (22 dog hours).

28 Jul 02         SWERA          2 dog teams (Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group Plymouth Section. Called out at 2200 hrs.

Search for a grandfather and his 2 grandchildren missing in Roughtor area. They were all located safe and well by DRG team and locals, having become lost and benighted in bad weather. Weather – misty, damp. Incident closed at 2330 hrs (3 dog hours).

 AUGUST

 05/06 Aug 02  SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, John Coombs) + Dartmoor Rescue Group Okehampton Section. Called out at 1800 hrs.
Search for a 20 yr old student missing after wandering away from graduation ceremony into an area of sand dunes. Dogs searched the dunes around the point last seen, finding nothing. Weather – dry. Incident closed 07 Aug 02 when body located in sea (21 dog hours).

07 Aug 02       PDMRO          5 dog teams (Malc. Bowyer, Steve Ward, Ken Sloan, Dave Coss, Alex Muller) + Woodhead MRT. Called out at 1534 hrs. Search for vulnerable male near Stocksbridge, Sheffield; missing from 1730 hrs the previous night. Missing man was located dead by Malcolm Bowyer and Trig. DOG FIND – MAL BOWYER AND TRIG. Incident closed at 1910 hrs (18 dog hours).

09 Aug 02       PDMRO          4 dog teams + Buxton, Derby and Kinder MRTs. Called out at 2230 hrs.
Search for a 78 yr old man missing from home the previous day. Missing man was found deceased by Derby MRT shortly after daybreak. Incident closed at 0900 hrs (42 dog hours).

 14 Aug 02       MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Helen Morton) + Rossendale MRT. Called out at 1900 hrs.

Search of woodland for a missing 34 yr old vulnerable male in the Bamber Bridge area of Preston. The man was located in Preston town centre.  Weather – nil wind, dry. Incident closed at 1230 hrs 19 Aug 02 (4 dog hours).

 01 Sep 02       PDMRO          4 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs, Alex Muller, Ken Sloan) + Edale, Buxton and Derby MRTs. Called out at 2200 hrs.
Search for a 76 yr old man missing in the Chatsworth House area after country fair. The man was located safe and well by a local resident during the night. Incident closed at 0030 hrs (9 dog hours).

 06 Sep 02       North Wales    1 SARDA (England) dog team (Bill Batson) + SARDA (Wales) + SARDA (South Wales) + Llanberis, Ogwen, Aberglaslyn, NEWSAR & Stafford MRTs + R122.
A major search for a missing 52 yr old fell runner in Snowdon/Llanberis area. The man was located dead by MRT members, having fallen some distance. Weather – dry, windy. (2 SARDA (England) dog hours)

 10 Sep 02       PDMRO          2 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs) + Derby MRT. Called out at 1500 hrs.
Search for a 13 yr old girl last seen on her paper round that morning.  The search was called off following information from Police that she was in Nottingham. Incident closed at 1830 hrs (7 dog hours).

18 Sep 02       PDMRO          2 dog teams (Dave Coss, Alex Muller) + Oldham MRT. Called out at 1540 hrs.
An ongoing search for a missing 40 yr old male near Staley Bridge. Nothing was found and the incident was closed at 1900 hrs (6 ½ dog hours).

 24 Sep 02       MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (HelenMorton) + Rossendale MRT. Called out at 0140 hrs.
Search for a missing 57 yr old man in Blackburn. Hospital grounds and waste land were searched before the missing man turned up at home. Weather – dry, cold. Incident closed at 0900 hrs (7 dog hours).

26 Sep 02       MID-PENNINE 3 dog teams (Ken Sloan, Dave Coss, Steve Ward) + Rossendale MRT. Called out at 0800 hrs. Search for a 66 yr old lady missing in the Huddersfield area. Missing woman was located alive but confused in woodland  by Ken Sloan and Steve Ward. DOG FIND – KEN LOAN AND JESS; STEVE WARD AND DREW. Incident closed at 1400 hrs (12 dog hours).

28 Sep 02       MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Helen Morton) + Rossendale, Oldham and Bolton MRTs. Called out at 0800 hrs.
Search for a missing 40 yr old man with learning difficulties in the Stalybridge area. Missing man was located by farmer a week later in Hyde, hiding in barn. Incident closed 04 Oct (6 dog hours).

 29 Sep 02       YDRP              2 dog teams (Kev Stead, Bill Batson) + Upper Wharfedale SRT and RAF Stafford MRT. Called out at 0815 hrs.
Called out by North Yorkshire Police to assist in the search for a missing 27 yr old man, possibly suicidal, in the Gargrave area. Searches underway of woodland when missing man’s body (hanged) was located close to his last known position, 10 miles away in Sutton in Craven. Weather – warm & dry; light wind. Incident closed at 1115 hours (6 dog hours).

 OCTOBER

 02 Oct 02        PDMRO          4 dog teams (Mal Bowyer, Ken Sloan, Dave Coss, John Coombs) + Glossop MRT. Called out at 1900 hrs.
Search for a missing local farmer in the Snake Pass area. Missing man was located before dogs deployed. Incident closed at 1930 hrs (2 dog hours).

 13 Oct 02        MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Pete Shaw). Called out at 1100 hrs.
Search for a 76 yr old female with a heart condition, missing from home in Leyland. A search of river and woodland was carried out, with nothing found. Weather – Very light wind, dry. Incident closed at 1230 hrs (1 ½ dog hours).

 14 Oct 02        MID-PENNINE 1 Dog team (Dave Marsh) + Bolton MRT. Called out at 1200 hrs.
Called out by Greater Manchester Police to help search for a missing 65 yr old schizophrenic lady from Wigan. Missing lady was located drowned in the River Douglas. Weather – rain showers, clearing later. Incident closed at 2400 hrs (12 dog hours).

 15 Oct 02        SWERA          3 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group Okehampton Section. Called out at 1500 hrs.
DRG was called in to one male with a leg injury at a known location. Foot teams backed up by dogs located not one but two casualties!  Cas with fractured leg + 1 DRG member who also fractured leg during incident helo lifted; hypothermic girl carried 4 km to ambulance. Weather – wet, misty. Incident closed at 0200 hrs (33 dog hours).

 17 Oct 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood) + Scarborough SRT and Cleveland SRT. Called out at 2100 hrs.
Search for a missing 75 yr old male who had escaped while being sectioned under the Mental Health Act. A search was carried out around the missing man’s home in Thornton le Dale, with nothing found. Weather – cool with gently breeze. Incident closed at 0330 hrs on 18 Oct 02 (7 dog hours).

 18/19 Oct 02   PDMRO          3 dog teams (Dave Coss, Alex Muller, Steve Ward) + Edale & Woodhead MRTs. Called out at 2325 hrs.
Search for a missing MRT member in the Derwent Valley area. Missing person located by Edale MRT alive but overdosed. Incident closed at 0045 hrs (3.75 dog hours).

 24 Oct 02        MID-PENNINE 2 dog teams (Ken Sloan, Steve Ward) + Holme valley MRT. Called out at 1530 hrs.
Dogs were asked to carry out a search of woodland near Huddersfield for a possible missing person. Nothing was found; possible hoax call. Incident closed at 1800 hrs (5 dog hours).

27 Oct 02        NESRA            1 dog team (Tim Wood) + Coastguard and Whitby lifeboat. Called out at 1340 hrs.
Search of steep ground and sea cliffs near Staithes after a car was reported as half-way down the cliff, with no sign of the occupants. The car was locked and on it’s roof. Search completed; nothing found. Weather – very strong northerly wind. Incident closed at 1710 hrs (3 dog hours).

29 Oct 02        SWERA          2 dog teams (Nicki Lyons, Ian Spreckley) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 0600 hrs.
Search of china clay quarries around the village of Nanpean near St Austell for a missing 75 yr old female. Missing lady was located drowned in flooded pit a few days later by quarry workers. Weather – Misty, wet. (14 dog hours).

31 Oct 02        PDMRO          4 dog teams (John Coombs, Alex Muller, Malc Bowyer, Steve Ward) + Buxton MRT. Called out at 1740 hrs.
Search for 2 missing walkers on Kinder Scout. Missing persons were located well but cold by Buxton MRT at 2010 hrs. Neither had map, compass or torch. Incident closed at 2110 hrs (14 dog hours).

 NOVEMBER

 13 Nov 02       PDMRO          3 dog teams (John Coombs, Stave Ward, Dave Coss) + Derby, Edale and Woodhead MRTs. Called out at 1000 hrs.
Search for a missing male in the Mansfield area. Search stood down at 1830 hrs. Ongoing. (25 dog hours).

16 Nov 02       PDMRO          3 dog teams (John Coombs, Dave Coss, Steve Ward) + Woodhead MRT. Called out at 0510 hrs.
Search for a missing male in the Hoyland area. Missing man was located by Woodhead MRT. Incident closed at 0615 hrs (3 dog hours).

18 Nov 02       PDMRO          3 dog teams (Issy Manning, Dave Coss, John Coombs) + Derby and Edale MRTs. Called out at 2355 hrs.
Continuation of search from 13 Nov 02 after clothing found in wood. Missing man’s body was located by MRT. Incident closed at 1830 hrs.

19 Nov 02       SWERA          3 dog teams (Alex Lyons, Matt Robertson, Ian Spreckley) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 0200 hrs.
Search for a missing suicidal man near Cramber Tor on Dartmoor. The man was located alive and well at home in Plymouth before search dogs deployed. Weather – misty, wet. Incident closed at 0500 hrs.

20/21 Nov 02  PDMRO          2 dog teams (Dave Coss, John Coombs) + Edale MRT. Search for a missing male in the Edale valley area. The missing man was located alive by search dog Sally. DOG FIND – DAVE COSS AND SALLY. Incident closed at 0025 hrs 21 Nov.

Search of Harrogate/Feizor area for a missing 30 yr old female with a history of depression. Incident ongoing. (27 + dog hours).

 23 Nov 02       PDMRO          1 dog team (Dave Coss) + Derby MRT. Called out at 0200 hrs.
Search for a missing person (possibly suicidal) who had run away into wood near Matlock. The missing person returned home before search dog deployed. Incident closed at 0220 hrs.

 25 Nov 02       SWERA          1 dog team (Ian Spreckley) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 1845 hrs.
Called out to Totnes to search for a missing 70 yr old man with Alzheimer’s Disease. Missing man was located by Police before search teams deployed. Weather – dry. Incident closed at 2030 hrs.

 DECEMBER

 08 Dec 02       PDMRO          1 dog team (Alex Muller) + Buxton MRT. Called out at 1030 hrs.
Search for a young male who had run away from a car after a Police chase in Perryfoot, Castleton. He was seen to run across land containing old mine shafts. The youth was later arrested in Buxton. Incident closed at 1300 hrs (2.5 dog hours).

 16 Dec 02       SWERA          2 dog teams (Ian Spreckley, Matt Robertson) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 0600 hrs.
A crashed car was found near Ivybridge; the driver was missing but believed to have suicidal tendencies. His mobile phone was discovered in vicinity of vehicle and a search of fields, woodland and golf course was carried out, with nothing found. The man later returned home. Weather – wet, cold and muddy. Incident closed at 2030 (11 dog hours).

 19 Dec 02       PDMRO          3 dog teams (Alex Muller, John Coombs, Steve Ward) + Kinder MRT. Called out at 1315 hrs.
Search for a missing person in Sett Valley Trail area, Hayfield, believed to have taken overdose. The missing person was located in bus shelter by Police. Incident closed at 1400 hrs (1.5 dog hours).

 23 Dec 02       SWERA          1 dog team (Ian Spreckley) + Dartmoor Rescue Group. Called out at 0600 hrs.
Search for a missing 21 year old who had become separated from friends while returning home from a night out in Hound Tor area. Missing person located (with hangover) by DRG member. Weather – dry; ground – very wet. Incident closed at 1145 (5 dog hours).

27/28 Dec 02  MID-PENNINE 1 dog team (Dave Marsh) + Bolton MRT. Called out at 2327 hrs on 27 Dec 02.
Search for a missing vulnerable 78 yr old lady missing from her daughter’s house in Prestwich. The search was called off with nothing found and the lady was located that evening, safe and well, some 8km from point last seen. Weather – dry but very wet underfoot. 8 C. (12 dog hours).

 29 Dec 02       PDMRO          6 dog teams (Izzy Manning, Mal Bowyer, Dave Coss, Alex Muller, John Coombs, Stave Ward) + Kinder MRT. Called out at 0730 hrs.
Search for a missing 42 yr old vulnerable man in the Hayfield area. A search of fields, parkland and woodland was carried out. The missing man was located safe and well in Stockport by Police. Weather – wet and windy. Incident closed at 1630 hrs (54 dog hours).
