Membership

All SARDA Handlers are members of Mountain Rescue Teams in England before they train as dog handlers.  Some of our current operational members are below :

Nev Sharp MBE; QJM. - President Nev is President of the Association. He started with the Association in
1979 and became a graded Handler in 1991. Nev brought with him a lot of
experience as he had been a Sergeant Dog Handler with the Police from 1966 to 1990.

Since retiring from active police service Nev has become a Consultant
Specialist Dog Handler (Human Remains Detection) to the Police Service. He is
actively involved with the Association as an Adjudicator at the Associations
annual assessments and has been involved in Mountain Rescue work for the
past forty years; latterly Team Leader with Calder Valley MRT for nine years.
Alex Lyons with Aiken and Max
Alex joined Dartmoor Rescue Group, Plymouth Section in 1982. He graded his first dog Scruff Feb 1987. Later that year due to work, transferred to the Tavistock Section of DRG.  In December  1988 he with forty-five other handlers attended the Lockerbie Air Disaster.
 
Alex served as DRG Executive Equipment Officer for three years, then SWERA Equipment Officer for the next three years.   Alex graded his second dog Mac 1990, then after five years as SARDA England  Training Coordinator, he graded his third and current dog Aiken 1996.
 
Alex is at present SARDA E Incident Coordinator for Graded Search Dogs, and graded his fourth dog, Max in October 2007.
Nicki Lyons and Cavos

Nicki has been a call out member of Tavistock Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team since May 1982.  Introduced to hill walking when completing her Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, she graded her first dog Dart Feb 1988 and was one of the forty-five handlers who attended the Lockerbie Air Disaster in December that year.

Nicki graded her second dog Bluie in 1995. Responding to over 700 incidents to date, with her dogs she had been responsible for locating 29 people alive and 6 deceased including 2 murder victims. She has served on the as SARDA committee for over ten years as members rep, training officer, secretary and latterly Chairman, standing down in 2005 to concentrate on training her third dog Cavos who qualified in October 2006. Cavos is a second generation of search dogs, his father is ‘Storm’ and litter brother ‘Rusty’ are both qualified search dogs and sister is in training.

Nicki holds the record for qualifying the youngest search dogs with both Dart and Cavos qualifying for operational duties at the age of 17 months.  She has was a finalist in the Premier South West 2004 awards in the compassion field and attended a Royal Garden party in July 2006 for her work with Mountain Rescue.  Nicki is currently the Chairman of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock and was awarded the MBE for her services to SARDA England and Mountain Rescue in June 2008. 

 
Bill Batson and Fern
Served in RAF for 27 years, for 26 of which he was a member of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service. Served as MR Team Leader at Leeming and Leuchars and as Chief Instructor to the RAF MRS for the last 5 years of service, before leaving in April 2004. Now  a member of the Cave Rescue Organisation in the Yorkshire Dales. Bill graded his  second SARDA dog - Fern - in January 2006. With his first dog, Kyle,  he was awarded the SARDA Shield for the best Novice Dog in January 2000.  
Malc Bowyer and Trigg I have a background of walking and climbing from the age of eleven, on rock, snow and ice, mostly in Scotland, the Lake District and Wales.  I now have over twenty five years experience in Mountain Rescue and have been involved in approximately five hundred callouts including the Lockerbie Air Disaster in1979.    I came to SARDA in 1988 and graded my first dog Glyn in March 1991  followed by Trigg, and have had continuous service as a SARDA dog handler since that time.   I am now training my third Collie Cap.  Both my previous dogs have been credited with successful finds.
Dave Humphries with Storm and Rusty Dave is an ambulance technician, a member of Exmoor Search And Rescue, successfully achieved full Grade with his dog Storm in January 2005, and graded with Rusty in October 2007.  Storm is the father of Rusty, Cavos and Misty who are all graded dogs owned and trained by Sarda members.
Ian Bunting and Tyke Ian joined Edale team in 1994 after working for the Peak Park Ranger Service for 4 years. He is currently Team  Leader having previously been Deputy Team Leader for 3 years and Secretary for 2 years.

Started training Tyke in Sept 2002 achieving novice grade Jan 2005 and Full Search Dog Grade in October 2006. Tyke is 3rd generation search dog with her mum "Baggage" and granddad "Haggis" both being fully graded search dogs.

Alex Muller and Holly Alex has been involved in mountain rescue for 30 years, firstly with the Ranger service and most of this time with Buxton MRT. He has been with SARDA as a dog handler for the past 10 years. Alex has walked / climbed and camped in Scotland, the Lake district, Wales and of course his own Peak district. He has been involved over the years with incidents in different parts of the country including the Lockerbie incident which he attended with the Buxton team, He served as training co-ordinator between the PDMRO and the RAF SAR Helicopters Leconfield. 
Dave Marsh and Chi Dave and Chi are members of Bolton MRT .

Dave works the Mid Pennine Search and Rescue Organisation.   Member of Bolton Mountain Rescue Team – joined 1976.  He's been involved with SARDA England - 3 years bodying,  7 1/2 handler.
Dogs Name: Chi, born 27-7-1997 Breed: Rodinglea Scruffy
They have  attended some 110 searches to date with 3 successful finds:-

Dave Herbert and Thor Dave 'migrated' North from Exmoor to Rossendale and married Anita, who is also training a dog.  Dave and Thor successfully achieved Full Grade in January 2005
Pete Shaw and Bracken Pete and Bracken were members of Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue team and have been operational for 6 years.  Brackens first find was only two weeks after grading., and she has had a further 4 finds since. 

Ian Thompson and Beth

Beth is a five year old red and white border collie. She is a true born and bred England/Scotland border dog. Initial grade achieved January 2003,Full Grade January 2005. Ian has been associated with Mountain Rescue since 1983 as a  member of North Of Tyne Search and Rescue Team, and has served as Training Officer, Secretary, Deputy Team Leader and Team Leader. Ian  began training search dogs in 1998.

Brian Allport and Gem

Brian has been climbing and hill walking for about 36 years, being  introduced to the great outdoors by way of the Scouts, initially as a Scout and later as a leader. Brian  joined Glossop Mountain Rescue team in 1983 and serving for 7 years,  two of which as treasurer. After a few years Brian became involved with SARDA as a dogsbody. Following this, Brian started training his first dog Sal 1989 and then Mac in 1990. 

A change of employment moved Brian to Northumberland in 1990 where he became a member of the Northumberland National Park Search & Rescue Team and started training his present dog Gem in 1999, being assessed to be on the callout list in 2001. Brian is currently the Treasurer of the Association.
Simon Adams and Pip Simon joined Calder Valley Rescue Team in 1987 and held the position of Probationary Training Officer for two years and subsequently Team Training Officer for a further two years. During his time as Training Officer, he became involved with SARDA as a dog team navigator. He began training his dog Tip in 1995, grading as Novice in Feb 97, and upgrading in Feb 98. Simon and Tip were involved in a number of searches for missing persons. Unfortunately Tip developed a terminal illness.

Simon now works with Pip who achieved Full Grade in January 2005.
Andy Colau and Tara Andy Colau has been a member of The Cave Rescue Organisation since 1976. The Cave Rescue Organisation covers both Cave Rescue & Mountain Rescue within a 900 square mile area of The Yorkshire Dales. Tara is Andy's 4th SARDA dog at Full Search Dog Grade.
Lee Ferry and Bracken Lee is a member of Teesdale and Weardale MRT and graded Bracken in January 2006
Paul Fell and Holly Paul is a member of Teesdale and Weardale MRT and graded Holly in January 2006
Des Toward and Misty Des is a member of Teesdale and Weardale MRT and graded Misty, his third search dog in January 2006
Anita Herbert and Merlot Anita graded Merlot in January 2006
David Warden with Sam and Nell David graded Nell, his second dog in March 2006.  Sam (on the left in the picture) will be retiring after seeing a long service as a search dog with SARDA England.
Dave Mason with Megan Dave, an active climber, mountaineer and hill walker since the age of 14. Joined Buxton Mountain Rescue Team in 2003. He has been Team secretary and is currently  the team's vehicle officer.

Dave's love of dogs lead him to start to train Megan in February 2005. The pair successfully achieved their grading in June 2007.
Paul Renwick and Skye Paul graded with Skye in January 2007.

Richard and Molly Richard has been involved in mountain, paddle and cave sports since he could walk and after an enforced 7 year period in southern England returned home in 2000 with his family to the Yorkshire Dales.

Rich has been a member of Swaledale MRT since that time and a deputy team leader since 2004. Rich graded his first dog Molly the spollie (Springer x collie) in January 2007.

Catherine with Bizzy and Jilly Catherine graded with Jilly (right) in January 2007. Catherine is now training Bizzy  as Jilly has developed dog type hay fever and is troubled by this in summer.

Both of Catherine's dogs have come from a dog recue centre.

Ian and Anya  Ian has been a member of Kinder Mountain Rescue Team since 1999 and  achieved Novice Grade with Anya in October 2007.
Alan and Sunny   Alan graded with Sunny in January 2008
