Nev Sharp MBE, QJM, MSc. - Association President

He started with the Association in 1979 and became a graded Handler in 1991.
Nev brought with him a lot of experience as he had been a Sergeant Dog Handler with the Police from 1966 to 1990.

Since retiring from active police service Nev has become a Consultant Specialist Dog Handler (Human Remains Detection) to the Police Service.

He is actively involved with the Association and has been the Adjudicator at the Associations annual assessments on many occasions.

He has been involved in Mountain Rescue work for the past forty years and was also Team Leader with Calder Valley MRT for nine years.
Alex Lyons - Max
Alex joined Dartmoor Rescue Group, Plymouth Section in 1982. He graded his first dog, Scruff Feb in 1987. Later that year due to work, transferred to the Tavistock Section of DRG. In December 1988 he with forty-five other handlers attended the Lockerbie Air Disaster.

Alex served as DRG Executive Equipment Officer for three years, then SWERA Equipment Officer for the next three years. Alex graded his second dog, Mac in 1990, then after five years as Sarda(E) Training Coordinator, he graded his third dog, Aiken in 1996.

He has since graded his fourth dog, Max in October 2007.

Alex is the Association's Graded Dogs Training Coordinator.
Nicki Lyons MBE - Cavos
Nicki has been a call out member of Tavistock Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team since May 1982. Introduced to hill walking when completing her Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, she graded her first dog, Dart in Feb 1988 and was one of the forty-five handlers who attended the Lockerbie Air Disaster in December that year.

Nicki graded her second dog, Bluie in 1995. Responding to over 700 incidents to date, with her dogs she has been responsible for locating 29 people alive and 6 deceased including 2 murder victims. She has served on the as SARDA committee for over ten years as members rep, training officer, secretary and latterly Chairman, standing down in 2005 to concentrate on training her third dog Cavos who qualified in October 2006. Cavos is a second generation of search dogs, his father is ‘Storm’ and litter brother ‘Rusty’ are both qualified search dogs and sister is in training.

Nicki holds the record for qualifying the youngest search dogs with both Dart and Cavos qualifying for operational duties at the age of 17 months. She was a finalist in the Premier South West 2004 awards in the compassion field and attended a Royal Garden party in July 2006 for her work with Mountain Rescue. Nicki is currently the Chairman of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock and was awarded the MBE for her services to SARDA England and Mountain Rescue in June 2008.
Bill Batson - Glen

Served in RAF for 27 years, for 26 of which he was a member of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service . Served as MR Team Leader at Leeming and Leuchars and as Chief Instructor to the RAF MRS for the last 5 years of service, before leaving in April 2004.

Now a member of the Cave Rescue Organisation in the Yorkshire Dales.

Bill has graded three dogs. His first dog, Kyle, in January 2000 and was awarded the Sarda(E) Shield for the best Novice Dog.

Bill graded his second dog, Fern in January 2006 and his third dog, Glen in January 2010.

Dave Humphrey - Storm and Rusty

Dave is an ambulance technician and a member of Exmoor Search And Rescue team. He successfully achieved full Grade with his dog Storm, in January 2005 and graded with Rusty, in October 2007.

Storm is the father of Rusty, Cavos and Misty who are all graded dogs owned and trained by Sarda(E) members.
Ian Thompson - Ben

Ian began training search dogs in 1998 and has graded with ben in November 2011.

Ian also has Beth a five year old red and white border collie. She is a true born and bred England/Scotland border dog. Initial grade achieved January 2003, Full Grade January 2005.

He has been associated with Mountain Rescue since 1983 as a member of North Of Tyne Search and Rescue Team, and has served as Training Officer, Secretary, Deputy Team Leader and Team Leader.



Ian is the Association's Chairman.
Brian Allport - Sam

Brian has been climbing and hill walking for about 36 years, being introduced to the great outdoors by way of the Scouts, initially as a Scout and later as a leader. Brian joined Glossop Mountain Rescue team in 1983, serving for 7 years, two of which as treasurer. After a few years Brian became involved with Sarda as a Dogsbody. Following this, Brian started training his first dog, Sal in 1989 and then Mac in 1990.

A change of employment moved Brian to Northumberland in 1990 where he became a member of the Northumberland National Park Search & Rescue Team and started training his present dog Gem in 1999, being assessed to be on the callout list in 2001 since then he trainind Sam to take over from Gem who has now retired..

Brian is the Association's Treasurer.
Andy Colau - Tara

Andy has been a member of Cave Rescue Organisation since 1976.

The Cave Rescue Organisation covers both Cave Rescue & Mountain Rescue within a 900 square mile area of The Yorkshire Dales.

Tara is Andy's 4th SARDA dog at Full Search Dog Grade.
Lee Ferry - Bracken

Lee is a member of North of Tyne Search and Rescue Team and graded Bracken in January 2006

Paul Fell - Holly
Paul is a member of Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team and graded Holly in January 2006
Des Toward - Misty

Des is a member of Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team and graded Misty, his third search dog in January 2006

Steve Ward - Bryn

Steve has been a member of MR for over 20 years, he recently transfered to Oldham team after many years with Woodhead team.


He joined Sarda in 1995, trained and graded his first dog Drew (left in picture) in 1997.

Trained and graded his second dog Bryn (right) in 2002 and has just started training his 3rd dog Ty.
David Warden - Nell

David graded Nell (right in picture), his second dog in March 2006. Sam (left) has retired after seeing a long service as a search dog with Sarda(E).

Dave Mason - Megan

Dave has been an active climber, mountaineer and hill walker since the age of 14. Joined Buxton Mountain Rescue Team in 2003. He has been Team secretary and is currently the team's vehicle officer.

Dave's love of dogs lead him to start to train Megan in February 2005. The pair successfully achieved their grading in June 2007.
Paul Rewick - Skye

Paul graded with Skye in January 2007.

Richard  Hey - Molly

Rich has been involved in mountain, paddle and cave sports since he could walk and after an enforced 7 year period in southern England returned home in 2000 with his family to the Yorkshire Dales.

Rich has been a member of Swaledale MRT since that time and a deputy team leader since 2004. Rich graded his first dog Molly the sprollie (Springer x collie) in January 2007.
Catherine Jones - Jilly and Bizzy

Cath graded with Jilly (right) in January 2007 and graded Bizzy in January 2010. Cath decided to train Bizzy as Jilly has developed dog type hay fever and is troubled by this in the summer months.

Cath is also the Association's Honorary Veterinary Advisor.
Pete Thompson - Hamish (left) and Bess (right)

Pete obtained Novice grade with Hamish in October 2007 and obtained Full Search Dog grade in October 2009.

Orginally Pete got Bess to train as a sheep dog to help with his work as a shepherd in winter time but decided to train her as a search dog instead.

Pete obtained Novice grade with his first search dog Hamish in October 2007 and obtained Full Search Dog grade in October 2009.

In January 2012 Pete and Bess passed the assessment and achieved Initial Grade search dog grade.
Ian Burley - Anya

Ian has been a member of Kinder Mountain Rescue Team since 1999 and achieved Novice Grade with Anya in October 2007.

In 2010 Ian became the Association's Communications Officer.
Alan Hill - Sunny

Alan graded with Sunny in January 2008
Wayne Thackray - Dodge

Wayne is a member of Woodhead MRT (WMRT) in the Peak District and has been involved with Mountain Rescue for about 8 years - 6 of those with WMRT. He started walking and mountaineering whilst completing his D of E award at school and as an Army Cadet .

They started training in October 2006 and they passed their assessment in October 2008.

In November 2011 Wayne and Dodge passed the upgrade assement to Full Grade Search Dog
Nick Smith - Zak

Nick is a member of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team in the Peak District. A keen walker and climber Nick has also been involved with caving and paragliding.

Nick feels Mountain Rescue is an extension of his passion for outdoor pursuits. When he was growing up Nick was surrounded by working dogs and has in the past worked his own sheep dogs. Having bodied for several years it was almost inevitable that Nick was going to train his own dog.

Zak is Nick's first search dog they passed their Initial Grade assessment in January 2010.

Nick and Zak were also awarded the Novice Shield at this assessment. This award is only given when in the opinion of the assessors the team have shown themselves to be of an exceptional standard during the assessment stages. This was last awarded in 2001, so this is great praise for them.

In November 2011 Nick and Zak passed the upgrade assement to Full Grade Search Dog

Paul Taylor - Toby

Paul achieved Initial Grade with Toby on the January 2010 assessment course.

In January 2012 Paul and Toby passed the upgrade assement to Full Grade Search Dog
Karen Fisher - Sam

Karen is a member of the Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team and has been involved with the team for over ten years (as at 2011).

Being a keen hill walker and totally dog mad, Karen was given the chance by her team to join Sarda and train a search dog.

Sam is a rescue dog who was abandoned on the streets of London at just three months old, he landed on his paws three months later when he left Battersea dogs home to come and live with Karen. In January 2008, at eight months old, Sam started his search dog training.

The journey over the next two years of training was hard but totally rewarding and in January 2010 on the annual assessment course Karen and Sam passed their Initial Grading and are now operational.

In January 2012 Karen and Sam passed the upgrade assement to Full Grade Search Dog
Ken Sloane - Abbie

Ken achieved Initial Grade with Abbie on the January 2010 assessment course.
John Coombs - Biscuit

John is a member of Edale Mountain Rescue Team.

He graded his forth search dog Flash in November 2011.

Prior to this he trained and graded Spider, Bonnie and Biscuit.

On the November 2011 assessment course John and Flash achieved Initial Grade status.
Kevin Stead - Flint and Gyp

Kevin first got involved in caving and mountaineering after leaving school, going on expeditions to Norway, Italy and France to both cave and climb. He later took up rock climbing in between dog training

He became a member of the Cave Rescue Organisation Leeds and Bradford Team in 1965.  In 1972 Kevin joined the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) and became an Assistant Underground Leader for three years. He was then appointed Underground Leader for a further three years until 1984.

UWFRA is involved in cave and mountain rescues and covers a multitude of caves and terrain topography in three Dales within the National Park.

Kevin started training with Meg but she was not interested in working and was withdrawn. Kevin has trained two dogs successfully; Flint and Gyp.
Flint was a full search dog and had a good career. Flint retired after Gyp graded in Snowdonia in 2006.
Graeme White - Fern

Graeme is part of the Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team.

He has been around the team for many years, 2 of those was as a member of the youth team. He then moved on to full team status where he has been an active member for over 18 years (as at 2011).

His dog is a Springer Spaniel bitch called Fern. They passed their assessment as Initial Search Dog grade in January 2011.
Ian Bertie - Ronnie

Ian is a member of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock.

Ian got Ronnie, a Border Collie, aged eight months from The Little Valley RSPCA Rescue Centre, Exeter.

They started training in the summer of 2009 and passed their assessment as Initial Search Dog grade in January 2011.
Mick Nield - Bob

Mick Joined Oldham MRT in 1988 and has been Team Leader since 1992.

Bob is not Mick’s first border Collie but this is the first time he has trained one as a search dog.

Before becoming Team Leader he did act as body for SARDA & navigator to Tony Tombs & Rosie Oldham teams first SARDA dog.

They passed their assessment as Initial Search Dog grade in January 2011.
Stephen Garofalo - Finn

Steve joined Rossendale and Pendle MRT in 1982 and first bodied for Sarda in 1985.

His first dog was a Tri-coloured Border Collie called Skye she lived from 1987 to 2000 and was on the callout list from 1990 to 1997.

Steve's second dog (Roy 1995 - 2008) was a Border Collie/Lakeland Cur Cross. Roy was on the callout list from 1998 to 2008.

Steve has now trained and graded his third dog Finn who is a Smooth Collie dog born in December 2007. They passed their assessment as Initial Search Dog grade in January 2011.
Ellie Sherwin - Pepper

Ellie Sherwin has been involved with SARDA England for more years than she cares to remember.

Starting as a dogsbody in the 1980’s helping train other dogs and handlers she decided to join the other side and graded Bonnie her first dog in 1996.

Bonnie and Ellie were awarded the Novice shield at their initial assessment. They then went on to find a missing casualty on the first call out a month after grading.

Pepper her second and current dog graded in January 2008. The team are still awaiting their first successful find.

Ellie is currently secretary for SARDA England for the second time, and has also been a member’s rep.
James Taylor-Short       - Poppy

James has been a member of HM Coastguard in Devon for many years.

He has been training with SARDA since December 2008 with Poppy who is James' first Search and Rescue dog.

Poppy loves to train and is totally fixated by her toy which for training is perfect!

In January 2012 James and Poppy passed the assessment and achieved Initial Grade search dog grade.
Tony High - Isla

Tony has been a member of Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team for 5 years.

Isla is Tony's first search dog, she is a border collie with 1 blue eye and 1 brown eye.

Tony says that Isla's favourite toy is a ring that she likes to play tuggy with or catch if it is thrown for her.

In January 2012 Tony and Isla passed the assessment and achieved Initial Grade search dog grade.

They were also awarded the Novice Shield for 2012 as the team to most impress the assessors on the assessment course.
